In Tall Tales of Demons, Gods and Superstitions, mythological creatures and supernatural phenomena invade the everyday lives of people around the world. Angels and demons conspire in the streets of London, Death drops in at a New York City laundromat, and phantoms lure children in the forests of ia, while the author himself runs into smoky sirens and Mephistophelian hawkers. But ultimately, these are tales of humanity—its loves, its passions, and its brutality.

Tall Tales Of Gods Demons And Superstitions eBook Ari Abraham

The author was a school friend of mine and as we hung out—as boys do—between classes, he would inevitably spin yarns about all sorts of things. These ranged from the side-splittingly funny to the seedily (even worryingly) transgressive, or more often than not, eclectic combinations of the two. I would often find myself gazing at him and wondering what was going on in that head of his. In “Tall Tales of Gods, Demons and Superstitions”, Arivind (as we called him back then) shows that he has lost none of the wit, humour and wonderfully warped imagination that drew me and other friends of his to him in the first place. The stories are pithy, well-placed and—for Western readers of the Asia-based tales—likely an absorbing introduction to the horror/supernatural tropes from our continent. That being said, the latter may seem a little de rigueur for seasoned readers (does the world really need another nasi kangkang story? One must hold him personally responsible if foodtrucks serving the stuff start popping up in Bushwick).

Like many, my personal favourites were “Christmas Eve” and “Death was an Ornery Bastard.” The former is likely influenced by the impending holiday season, which, as I grow older, I seem to anticipate with ever-growing, irrational excitement and joy. “Death…” on the other hand is a particular treat because the authorial voice comes out as very strong and authentic. This, among all the stories in the collection, reminds me of the sort of yarns Arivind would shoot the breeze with all those years ago, during long, hot or dreary mornings in a Malaysian secondary school, when (to paraphrase Dylan) we were older than we were today; when we thought that all we had to look forward to in life was the Experience and that we would never miss the Innocence.

Tall Tales Of Gods Demons And Superstitions eBook Ari Abraham Reviews

I found this book a solid read for those times you want to just tuck into a quick read. The short stories reminded me of the adult Roald Dahl short stories; although creepier and darker. Loved every page of it. Being Asian myself, the stories resonated with a lot of the old wives tales i heard growing up blurring the line between fact and fiction. A great read.
Each short tale has it's own flavor. Some are heartfelt, some creepy and some are just weird. I could definitely picture each of these stories happening; the worlds were certainly created by someone who has seen many of the places described. Wouldn't be hard to read more of these good little adventures. They're just long enough to make one think!
This book is a reflection of the complex soul of a well-traveled, creative individual. Hardly a collection of classic campfire tales, this juicy, quick read offers eerie perspectives on life, death, sex, and all things we think to be true. Expand your horror repertoire and pick up a copy of Gods Demons, and Superstitions. If you like the smart side of horror, you won't be able to put it down.
Riveting from start to finish! Above and beyond being just a collection of spooky fun stories, Tall Tales manages to strike at the very heart of humanity and capture everything from our ability to hope and love ("Christmas Eve" moved me cry), our need for connection and the enduring spiritual bonds we can build ("Missing Hank" made me cry MORE) right down to our darkest, most twisted depravities (read "Halal" and shudder). The stories zip excitingly around the globe from Asia to the ian forests, and the writer's specificity of knowledge in each region is impressive. Between the vast array of geographical and mystical references as well as the compelling core of humanity driving each story, I believe every reader will find something they will want to read and re-read.
Really loved this. Great storytelling.
Ari deftly guides you through these fascinating short stories that seem to have existed before modern memory. This is a finely crafted collection with a common, unsettling thread. A fine and twisted thread, that is delicately stitched through time and punctures the world at familiar, yet distant places.
You will emerge wiser, happily disoriented, and eagerly awaiting his next work.
Mystical with a punch! This little book full of tales will have you flipping through the pages laughing, crying, cringing and wanting more. I was always curious for what follows after the last page in each story, leaving the door open for my imagination to take over, and that's a mark of a good author in my book. With "Trick or Treat" around the corner, I'd say this is a treat!
