Compared to other works of the author that I've read, including both the Phantom of the Opera and The Mystery of the Yellow Room, I was disappointed by this novel. There were sections that were boring to get through because the events that unfolded seemed too peripherally related to the story and, hence, uninteresting. Also, being set in Russia, there were the annoying confusions that arise from characters having multiple names. Finally, the solution to the mystery was a bit too convoluted to be totally convincing. Overall, while I found the main character Joseph Rouletabille to be both interesting and delightful in the Mystery of the Yellow Room to the point of leaving the reader wanting more of his brilliant mental gymnastics and quirky behaviors, I found the character becoming somewhat tedious in this novel. As far as the audio book is concerned, the voice characterizations and overall performance of the narrator were quite stilted.Product details

I found myself skimming over much of this book. Before I purchased it I read the reviews and probably expected something different. Plot was interesting but it did not move at a fast pace.
It's definitely refreshing to read a Rouletabille story narrated without the kind of melodramatic perspective of Sanclair. Great story, but not a deep mistery a The Mistery of the Yello Room.
Good story
Another in the series of Joseph Rouletabille detective stories. Very good. Make sure to read Gaston Leroux's Mystery of the Yellow Room before you read this one.
I have been looking for 2 books (The mystery of the yellow room and The secret of the night by Gaston Leroux, for a very long time.
They were written in the early 1900's, about 1906 if I'm not mistaken.
I live in Uruguay, South America, and as I was visiting the US, I decided to check the Internet for these books and voila, I found them in . I placed the order, and have them delivered to my son's address.
They were delivered at the time they promised, and the service was great.

Very good translation and very informative about that time in Russia.
The Secret of the Night, the third in Gaston Leroux's mysteries featuring the memorable reporter and amateur sleuth Joseph Rouletabille, is a marvelous read; however, until now, until I purchased this edition published by Aegypan, I couldn't find a decent version, as the copies I'd come across were seemingly pulled straight from the free-text available on the internet, and were, therefore, chock-full of mistakes.
In many quarters this story isn't as highly-rated as its literary siblings, The Mystery of the Yellow Room, which is generally considered the first and the finest of the "locked-room" mysteries, and its sequel, The Perfume of the Lady in Black; but, in my opinion, The Secret of the Night is so much more than merely a worthy follow-up to its noted predecessors, it is in every way their equal.
Like most of Boris Akunin's best-selling mysteries featuring Erast Fandorin, The Secret of the Night takes place in Tsarist Russia and includes plenty of interesting and intricate plot twists and action, enough to hook even the most jaded of readers. And in the person of the amazing Joseph Rouletabille, The Secret of the Night can boast of a detective every bit as admirable and perspicacious.
Boris Akunin's inventive modern-day mysteries are extremely popular and rightly so (truth is, I read them just as fast they come to market!); but Gaston Leroux wrote his first, long ago, and just as well! Check them out for yourself and you'll see...
